Bridal Beauty Look: Where do you start?

Choosing your wedding beauty is an essential part of your bridal era. This defining moment in your life needs to be marked in a way that seems authentic to who you are as a person. Something that you will look back on in 10/20 years and only think “damn I looked good”.

For the inaugural post for “Wedding Belles” by GWS, we’re discussing what and how to create your bridal vision. You found the guy, bought the dress, and reserved the venue… it’s now time to decide who you want to be on your wedding day.

Bridal Aesthetic

Aesthetic is a term that is so the 2020s. If you love curating a Pinterest board, scrolling instagram, and saving TikTok’s… chances are you’ve heard of the aesthetic. Simply put, it’s the vibe, the feeling you want to evoke. Your wedding is no different. Whether it’s based on a colour scheme, a certain phrase/motif, you’ve been developing an aesthetic for the ENTIRE event. So why not do the same for your wedding day beauty!

Let us begin with the key questions I ask my brides:

What are your wedding colours?

How would you describe your dress and venue?

Are there key words that come to mind when you envision your wedding day?

How do you want to look on your wedding day?

Ultimately, what I’m looking for are words that are going to direct me in terms of styles of makeup and hair. If a bride answers with “fresh”, “beachy”, or “summery” then I’m picturing loose waves, sun kissed cheeks, and flirty lashes. On the flip side, if the bride uses words like “romantic”, “soft”, and “dreamy”, then I would suggest an updo or pulled back half up with elevated glamour with some classic bridal elements. Terminology and descriptions can do wonders when it comes to the initial direction.

Next would be inspiration photos… this is where things can get tricky! When looking through thousands of photos, the most common mistake I see are brides looking at the image as a whole instead of the elements. The next time you add a photo to your beauty pinterest board, ask yourself what is it that you like. Is it the eye makeup? Is it the blush or lack of? Do you like the simplicity of the look or that the model’s skin is flawless with fluttery lashes and a pouty lip?

Identifying the key aspects will help narrow down not just what you like, but what you don’t like!

Another common mistake is looking at photos of models that are overly photoshopped or don’t share similar qualities to you. If you have brown eyes and dark hair, you shouldn’t be saving images of models with blonde hair and blue eyes. The results will not translate the same way which can leave you feeling disappointed. Now this may seem crazy, but maybe it’s time to move away from only pinterest for your photos. Instead searching your “locationMUA” will help find artists in your area to see their work on real people. Now photoshopping can still exist even with those artists, but generally speaking, this will match you Makeup Artists who reflect your vision.

What’s next…

You’ve saved a few images to show your likes and dislikes along with terms and words that best reflect your wedding day, now it’s time to find an artist that will not only achieve this ideal look but match your energy and (most importantly) budget! There will always be a range of artists, and an expensive price tag is not always an indicator of them being the right match for you. Send out messages, look through their website, and read reviews to narrow down your search. Bridal makeup artists are individualized and specialized in certain looks, so finding someone that will deliver your vision while balancing with your energy will improve the entire experience.

At the end of the day, your bridal hair and makeup needs to reflect the person you want to be in this next phase of your life. It’s not about looking like a certain celebrity or what others might like. These are key moments and memories of your life, and you want to cherish them.
